An anonymous reader writes "Select to copy and middle-click to paste. That's very convenient usability feature associated with UNIX graphical environments. But it is confusing for new users, so the ability to middle-click paste was briefly removed from GNOME 3.10. It was restored few days later, but with clear message: middle-click paste will be permanently removed from next GNOME version." I hope that "we'll defer this change until the next cycle" also means that it's getting re-thought, rather than just delayed.

So I have to ask... Given that this paper is a survey of common usage of the concept of data, are you taking a pragmatist approach to the reality of what data is? To me, it seems that the colloquial usages of the concept of "data" is only relevant once the metaphysical concept of "data" is fully established. Honestly, my philosophy studies haven't taken me into this route yet, so I am not certain that this concept is ill defined at this time.

@skoobahdiver Depends on what hat I'm wearing. This is mainly a question of "how do we deal with people saying the word 'data' " Basically, one of the major IT problems is that we think we know what the word data means when it comes out of our clients/requirementGenerator's mouths. This understanding is a *real* problem, since it often doesn't tend to match up. Also, as a pragmatist, there's no platonic form of data. There is only how we define it in the nested Baudrilliardian simulacra we live in.

An anonymous reader writes "While the tech media has gone wild the past few days with the reports of the NSA tracking Verizon cell usage and creating the PRISM system to peer into our online lives, a new study by Pew Research suggests that most U.S. citizens think it's okay. 62 percent of Americans say losing some personal privacy is acceptable as long as its used to fight terrorism, and 56 percent are okay with the NSA tracking phone calls. Online tracking is fair less popular however, with only 45 percent approving of the practice. The data also shows that the youth are far more opposed to curtailing privacy to fight terror, which could mean trouble for politicians planning to continue these programs in the coming years."
